Overcoming Temptation

Temptation- is defined in Wikipedia as an act that looks appealing to an individual. It is usually used to describe acts with negative connotations and as such, tends to lead a person to regret such actions, for various reasons: legal, social, psychological (including feeling guilt), health, economic, etc. Temptation also describes the coaxing or inducing a person into committing such an act, by manipulation or otherwise of curiosity, desire or fear of loss.

Temptation is such a common thing in this world. It always follow you wherever you go, whether you will be at home, work, school, streets, or even at church. The fact is, it is always presence wherever you are. So what are yo gonna do now..? Will just give in...? Or you will stand against it...?

Each of us has our own weaknesses. I don't have to list all  those things here for you to know your weakness.. And the devil knows how to attack you. But before proceeding, let me just clarify this: TEMPTATION IS NOT DESIGNED BY GOD.

James 1:13-15

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust , and enticed.
Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

See the equation...?

Give in to your own Lust ------> SIN ------> DEATH

Yes. You read it right... DEATH!!! Pretty scary huh...? Overcoming temptations are not easy to do. Especially if it tackles about your strongest desires... And you are usually tempted when you are at your most vulnerable state. Take note of this: HALT. Pretty familiar....? For those who haven't bumped in this yet here's the meaning:

  • H- Hungry
  • A- Alone
  • L- Lonely
  • T- Tired

Just take for example, Jesus tempted by Satan after His baptism: He's alone, hungry and tired.. Lonely...? I'm not sure with that... Might be. But the point is, Jesus was tempted too.. and HE overcome it. And he was tempted while He was still on His human nature. That implies that, we too, can overcome temptations... But how...?

  • Word of God- If the word of God becomes a part of your life, then it increases your endurance against temptation. Just what Jesus said to Satan:"It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God". He used the Scripture to overcome temptation.
  • Prayer- This is the most powerful tool against the devil. Talking to God constantly draws you more closer to Him. Building a relationship with the Lord makes you stand stronger against the attacks of the devil. As what says in the Lord's Prayer: "And lead us not into temptation".

We can't overcome the devil by ourselves alone. We need the Lord to help us. And Prayer and His Word builds that relationship between  you and God.

Does God allows temptations to happen ...?

1 Corinthians 1:13

"No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able; but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it."

As what I understand, Yes! But, as what he said: "And God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able".

James 1:12

"Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him."

So what is the result of giving in to temptation..? DEATH

And for enduring temptation...? CROWN OF LIFE

IT IS YOUR CHOICE!!!

The Mormons

Most commonly known as the The Church of the Latter Day Saints (LDS)... According to their belief, Mormon is the name of their prophet who wrote the Book of Mormon...

Joseph Smith, Jr. (December 23, 1805- June 27, 1844)

  • an American religious figure who founded the Latter Day Saint movement, also known as Mormonism.
  • became a political and military leader in the American Midwest.
  • declared to be the first latter-day prophet,  whose mission was to restore the original Christian Church, said to have been lost soon after the death of the Apostles which caused an apostasy.

Golden Plates

  • are set of bound and engraved metal plates that Joseph Smith, Jr. said was his source for the Book of Mormon,  one of the faith's sacred texts.

Angel Moroni

  • an angel that Joseph Smith, Jr. said visited him on numerous occasions.
  • guardian of the golden plates

Four Books on the LDS: the Holy Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price

1. The Bible

  • The Bible is the collection of religious writings of Judaism and of Christianity

2. Book of Mormon

  • a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible.  It is a record of God’s dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains, as does the Bible, the fullness of the everlasting gospel.
  • According to the Book of Mormon, a man named Mormon compiled nearly 1000 years of writings as well as chronicled events during his lifetime. The text of the Book of Mormon consists of this compilation and his own writings with some additional writings. For his work, the book is named after him.
  • believed by Latter Day Saints to be a historical and religious record translated by Joseph Smith, Jr., into English by divine inspiration from Golden Plates that he received from the Angel Moroni.
  • relates a history of three civilizations in the Americas from approximately 2700 B.C. until about 420 A.D., written by their prophets and followers of Jesus Christ.

3. Doctrine and Covenants

  • a collection of divine revelations and inspired declarations given for the establishment and regulation of the kingdom of God on the earth in the last days.

4. The Pearl of Great Price

  • is a selection of choice materials touching many significant aspects of the faith and doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  These items were produced by the Prophet Joseph Smith and were published in the Church periodicals of his day.
Following is a brief introduction to the present contents:

  • Selections from the Book of Moses- An extract from the book of Genesis of Joseph Smith’s Translation of the Bible, which he began in June 1830
  • The Book of Abraham-  A translation from some Egyptian papyri that came into the hands of Joseph Smith in 1835, containing writings of the patriarch Abraham.
  • Joseph Smith—Matthew- An extract from the testimony of Matthew in Joseph Smith’s Translation of the Bible.
  • Joseph Smith—History- Excerpts from Joseph Smith’s official testimony and history
  • The Articles of Faith of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints-  A statement by Joseph Smith in company with a short history of the Church that was popularly known as the Wentworth Letter; a concise listing of thirteen fundamental doctrines

Beliefs and Practices:

1.God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost

  • The church teaches that God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost  are "one Godhead" but separate persons:

a) They are one Godhead (numerically one)

b) They are one in spirit, mind, and purpose (agreed in one)

c) They hold the keys to govern and preside over the cosmos (one in power and authority)

2.Three distinct beings, as well as three distinct persons

  • They believe: "The Father has a body of flesh and bone as tangible as man's; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit. Were it not so the Holy Ghost could not dwell in us"

3. God the Father

  • God the Father is understood to be the literal Father of the spirits of all mankind.
  • He is also understood to be the Father of Jesus' spirit body and his physical body

4. His son, Jesus Christ

  • Those who accept Christ and are baptized are symbolically born again and become the children of Christ.
  • Jesus Christ is central to his father's plan of happiness
  • Christ's divinity enabled him to take upon himself the penalty for sin and to endure the consequential suffering and on the cross
  • Jesus' status as the son of a mortal woman gave him the ability to suffer temptations and experience physical death
  • Believes in the physical resurrection of Jesus' body: that his physical body and spirit body were reunited, never again to be separated.
  • The church follows what it understands to be the teachings of Jesus, both in the Bible and in other scriptures, such as the Book of Mormon.
  • Jesus is the LORD Jehovah of the Old Testament,  and the Holy One of Israel. Because he has the "Divine Investiture of Authority" from the Father, the church teaches that Jesus Christ often speaks in the scriptures as though he were God the Father, because in so doing he is representing the Father.

5.The Holy Ghost

  • Believed as the Comforter promised by Jesus Christ
Regarded as "a being endowed with the attributes and powers of Deity and not a mere force or essence.
  • Testifies of the Father and the Son.
  • The Holy Ghost can sanctify people enabling them "to put off the natural man and [become]a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord.

6. Other heavenly figures

"As man is, God once was-- and as God is, man may become"

Mankind, as spirit children of their father in heaven, can become like him.
Official church materials refer to "Heavenly Parents," implying to some the existence of a Heavenly Mother.

7. Prayer

  • The church encourages all people to pray often "for the evil spirit teacheth not a man to pray, but teacheth him that he must not pray"
  • God is to be approached in reverence. Generally, prayer is addressed to God the Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, and thanks or petitions are expressed as prompted by the Holy Ghost.

8. Apostasy, restoration, and priesthood

  • Believes in Great Apostasy (general fallen state of Man)
  • It teaches that after the death of Jesus and the 12 Apostles, the priesthood  authority was lost and some important doctrinal teachings, including the text of the Bible, were changed from their original form, thus necessitating a Restoration prior to the Second Coming.
  • Priesthood- offered to all male members ages 12 and older who follow the church's code of morality

Aaronic Priesthood-  given to young men ages 12-17

  1. Deacon-  first office in this priesthood level. There primary duty is to pass the sacrament to members on Sundays and collect fast offerings.
  2. Teacher- is the second office and is given to males ages 14 and 15. The primary duty is to prepare the sacrament and to help members in need if requested.
  3. Priest- is the highest office in the Aaronic Priesthood given the males ages 16 and 17. The primary duty is to bless the sacrament. Priests also have the authority to baptize people members of the church.

Melchizedek Priesthood- holders are 18 or older but each office does not have a set age for progression.

  1. Elder- The first office. An Elder may confer the gift of the Holy Ghost; give blessings by the laying on of hands; ordain other Elders; and possesses all the rights of the Aaronic priesthood
  2. High Priest- the second office. A High Priest is responsible for the spiritual welfare of their congregation of saints; may serve in a bishopric, stake presidency, high council, or temple presidency and may serve as a mission president. Further, he may ordain other High Priests and Elders, can perform the duties of both and Elder and all Aaronic priesthood duties. All members that are high priests hold, or have held, a leadership position in the church.
  3. The third office is Patriarch. A Patriarchs' main responsibility is to provide patriarchal blessings for members of a stake or district (a geographiic region of multiple congregations) and to declare an individual's linage.
  4. The fourth office is Seventy. This office is generally reserved for general authorities that assist in the administration of the church worldwide. They usually have specific regions of responsibility around the world.
  5. The fifth office is Apostle. This office is reserved for members of the Quorum of the Twelves Apostles or members of the First Presidency. The main purpose is to testify of Jesus Christ to the world at large and to oversee all the spiritual and temporal administration of the church.

9. Ordinances, covenants and temples

Ordinances- the LDS sacraments which has two types: the saving and the non-saving ordinances.

  1. Saving ordinances are those that grant access to certain blessings that flow from the Atonement, and include:
  • Baptism by immersion
  • Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost
  • The "sacrament"of the Lord's supper, taken each Sunday, to keep in remembrance of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and to renew the covenant made at baptism, ordination to an office of the priesthood (for males)
  • The initiatory or washings and anointing,  the Endowment, celestial marriage, and family sealings
    • The church teaches that to obtain the highest degree of  salvation  all people who have lived to the age of eight must participate in each of the saving ordinances. However, the church teaches that they may be performed for a person either during their lifetime or by proxy after the person has died. Therefore, church members participate in the saving ordinances on behalf of dead relatives and others whose names have been extracted from historical records.

     2. Non-saving ordinances include the dedication of graves, the dedication of
buildings, the prayer circle, the Hosanna shout, shaking the dust from the feet
and various kinds of blessings, including the patriarchal blessing.

10. Plan of salvation

Called as "The Great Plan of Happiness," as taught by the church, describes humanity's place in the universe and the purpose of life.

Pre-mortal Existence

  • The church teaches that there was a pre-mortal existence , a place which existed prior to mortality in which all people and all life were created in spirit form.
  • Before we were born on the earth, we lived in the presence of our Heavenly Father as one of His spirit children. In this pre-mortal existence, we attended a council with Heavenly Father's other spirit children. At that council, Heavenly Father presented His great plan of happiness
  • The earth, according to church teachings in the temples, was created by Jehovah, which the church identifies as the pre-mortal Jesus, and Michael the archangel,  who is identified as the pre-mortal Adam. Michael's spirit was placed into his body which was created by God the Father and Jehovah, and became a living soul known as Adam.
  • Throughout our pre-mortal lives, we developed our identity and increased our spiritual capabilities. Blessed with the gift of agency, we made important decisions, such as the decision to follow Heavenly Father's plan. These decisions affected our life then and now. We grew in intelligence and learned to love the truth, and we prepared to come to the earth, where we could continue to progress.

Mortal Life

  • Our spirits are united with our bodies, giving us opportunities to grow and develop in ways that were not possible in pre-mortal life.
  • A time of learning in which we can prove ourselves, choose to come unto Christ, and prepare to be worthy of eternal life.
  • A time when we can help others find the truth and gain a testimony of the plan of salvation.

    Life after Death

    • When we die, our spirits will enter the spirit world and await the resurrection.
    • There, a preliminary judgment is done, based solely on whether a person has had a baptism by the authority of the priesthood and received their confirmation either in this life or after death by proxy places the spirit in either a state of paradise(has completed all the saving ordinances) or spirit prison (those who have not had the saving ordinances). Those in "prison" will be visited by spirits from paradise and given the chance to learn of the teachings of Jesus Christ and to accept the accompanying saving ordinances
    • At the time of the resurrection, our spirit and body will reunite, and we will be judged and received into a kingdom of glory. The glory we inherit will depend on the depth of our conversion and our obedience to the Lord's commandments. It will depend on the manner in which we have "received the testimony of Jesus".
    • Then the nature of the body will depend on the result of the Last Judgment,   at which Jesus will assign each soul to one of three degrees of glory (heavenly kingdoms)
      • Celestial Kingdom- in the presence of the Father and the Son for those who accept Jesus Christ and receive all LDS saving ordinances, either as a mortal or by proxy
      • Terrestrial Kingdom- a place of glory in the presence of Christ for righteous persons who refuse to receive the saving ordinances and for those who do not keep the covenants they commit to
      •  Telestial Kingdom- or the wicked. A further destination, which is called the "Outer Darkness" is reserved for Satan, his devils, and those mortals who commit the unpardonable sin  and thereby become the sons of perdition.
      • Those who are ultimately destined for the Telestial Kingdom  will be those who suffer for their sins in hell; however, these persons remain in hell only the 1000 years during the millennial reign of Christ, after which they will exit hell and be resurrected with an immortal body into a state of peace.
      • Those in the Celestial Kingdom will be allowed to continue to progress and become joint heirs with Jesus Christ; but only individuals that are in the highest degree of the Celestial Kingdom will eventually be enabled in eternity to become gods and goddesses and participate in the eternal creative process of having spirit children.

    11. View of history and eschatology

    • The church's view of history is informed by the faith's scriptures.
    • According to teachings in the Book of Mormon, the Americas are a special location reserved by God for those who love freedom and freedom of religion.
    • According to Joseph Smith,  the location of Garden of Eden was at Jackson County, Missouri and it will be the location of the future new Jerusalem.
    • Native Americans are typically declared to be descended from the Tribe of Manasseh based on the teachings of the Book of Mormon
    • The church teaches that in the future, the Second Coming of Jesus will occur followed by a thousand years if peace which is commonly known as Millennialism.
    • As the earth transitions into the Millennial period, only those good and honorable people who stand to inherit the celestial or terrestial kingdom   will continue on the earth. During the millennium the Latter-day Saints will continue to proselytize among the living and perform ordinances for the dead.
    • After the millennium will come a final great confrontation of good versus evil, and then the Last Judgment.

    12. Theology of family and gender

    • The LDS Church has been characterized as a family-centered religion.
    • Families may be "sealed"—meaning that they are eternally bound as husband-wife, parents–child—and that these bonds will continue after death.
    • Sealings can also include deceased ancestor
    • Each person's gender is eternal and that gender roles are authorized by God: in general, men are to preside over and provide for their families and women are to nurture children.
    • Transgender persons are accepted in the church and may be baptized, but may not receive the priesthood or enter the temple if they are considering or have undergone elective sex reassignment surgery.
    • Women can't be ordained to the priesthood, yet preaching and instruction by women is an integral part of weekly

    13. The Law of Chastity

    • The law of chastity prohibits pre-marital sex and adultery, which includes gay and lesbian sex
    • The law also prohibits other sexual behavior, such as bestiality, masturbation, lust, sexual fantasy, and viewing pornography
    • Include standards of modesty in dress and action
    • The church encourages members to enter a celestial marriage, the only form of marriage recognized by the church as a sacrament  and "the only due and proper way of joining husband and wife".
    • Presently recognizes only civil unions that are considered "legal and lawful" by the government where it takes place, with certain exceptions including same-sex marriage, polygamous marriage, common law marriage and other types of non-ceremonial marriages in non-common law countries

    14. Duties and expectations of church members

    • For members of the church, the greatest commandment is to love God with all their heart and the second is to love others as they love themselves.
    • Members are expected or encouraged to pray frequently (several times a day), perform good works, and read scriptures daily.
    • Members are expected to donate their time, money, and talents to the church.
    • In addition to attending the weekly three-hour church services, members are usually given "callings" or assignments in the church, and often attend various other meetings or activities throughout the week relating to that calling.
    • Home visitations
    • Church members are encouraged to live self-sufficiently and avoid unnecessary debt
    • All male members are expected to serve a two-year mission at the age of 19; Women may optionally serve a mission if they are over the age of 21 and not married, as may older married couples. The womens mission is only one year and a half compared to that of a male which is two years.
    • Requires that members follow the "Word of Wisdom" (a health code given by Joseph Smith which the church interprets as requiring abstinence from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, coffee, black tea, and recreational drugs).
    • Follow the law of chastity
    • Strongly counseled against choosing an elective abortion, except in the cases rape or incest,  a pregnancy that seriously jeopardizes the life or health of the mother, or a pregnancy where a physician determines that the fetus has severe defects that will not allow the baby to survive beyond birth.
    • Must obey the law of the country they live or visit
    • Discouraged gambling in all forms including lotteries

    My Comment

It is just now that I gained knowledge about the Mormons of the Latter Day Saints (LDS). For me, I don't care how many books and scriptures will a denomination adds, as long as it does not contradicts the Bible and it coincides history. Some beliefs and practices of the LDS are great, yet they can never let me believe their plan of salvation. I also don't believe in their belief of being a proxy to continue the ordinances.  One is subject to his own actions. And there is no such thing as world of the spirits after death. And I strongly disagree about that preliminary judgment. One the person is dead, he doesn't have any chances anymore.

    What happens at death?

Ecclesiastes 12:7  Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit (breath) shall return unto God who gave it.
Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6, 10 The dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory (their thoughts)of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun [in this life]. ... For there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave.

    • The presence of the heavenly kingdoms. So is it fine for a person not to keep the saving ordinances since their is still a kingdom that awaits for him..? And did they say that after hell, the dead body will resurrect and go to the state of peace..? What is the essence of trying to be righteous if sinners can still attain peace, and take note: be resurrected!...???

"'The day is coming, burning like an oven, and all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble. And the day which is coming shall burn them up,' says the Lord of hosts, 'that will leave them neither root nor branch'" (Mal. 4:1).

    • I can't find any passages that said that Adam is Michael the archangel...
    • I can't find any passages that Moses and Satan had a conversation..
    • What do gods and goddesses mean..?
    • And where is the Garden of Eden..? In Jackson County..?

10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. 11 The name of the first is Pison that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the  onyx  stone. 13 And the name of the second river is  Gihon : the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia . 14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Asyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.
                                                    — Genesis 2:10-14 KJV

Unless Assyria and Tigris and Euphrates will be transferred to Jackson County, I'll believe it.

That's all for now.. I'm over tired...

    Old Testament

    • Moses- the Torah: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy
    • Joshua- unknown author; The author must have been an eyewitness of the events he records including Joshua's death. Some opinions stated that Joshua must have written the book except for the last verses. Others stated that the book of Joshua must be regarded as a compilation
    • Judges-  The author of this book was most probably Samuel
    • Ruth- The Book of Ruth does not specifically name its author. The tradition is that the Book of Ruth was written by the Prophet Samuel.

    • Nehemiah- The Book of Nehemiah does not specifically name its author. It is highly likely that either Nehemiah or Ezra was the author
    • Esther- not specified; The most popular traditions are Mordecai (a major character in the Book of Esther) and Nehemiah (who would have been familiar with Persian customs).
    • Job- not specified; The most likely candidates are Job, Elihu, Moses and Solomon.

    Nihilism- Meaningless

Nihilism-comes from the Latin nihil, or nothing, which means not anything, that which does not exist. It appears in the verb "annihilate," meaning to bring to nothing, to destroy completely.

Friedrich Nietzsche- Often associated with the philosophy of nihilism. In his "Will to Power", he stated that: "Every belief, every considering something-true is necessarily false because there is simply no true world".

Nihilists generally assert some or all of the following:

    • there is no reasonable proof of the existence of a higher ruler or creator,
    • a "true morality" does not exist, and
    • objective secular ethics are impossible; therefore, life has, in a sense, no truth, and no action is objectively preferable to any other.

The objective of nihilism manifests itself in several perspectives:

    • Epistemological nihilism denies the possibility of knowledge and truth, and is linked to extreme skepticism.
    • Political nihilism advocates the prior destruction of all existing political, social, and religious orders as a prerequisite for any future improvement.
    • Ethical nihilism (moral nihilism) rejects the possibility of absolute moral or ethical values. Good and evil are vague, and related values are simply the result of social and emotional pressures.
    • Existential nihilism, the most well-known view, affirms that life has no intrinsic meaning or value.

Can you believe on the philosophers who formulated with this nonsense philosophy..? Well, as their philosophy in life, it shows that nihilist are meaningless, useless, vague, and etc. I wonder if they ever attained happiness in life.. How poor the soul of the person who doesn't have any directions in life and who doesn't give any meaning to the happenings in the world.  They don't value anyone, like family and friends. Or, I think they don't have friends because they don't believe in friends. It's like living alone in this universe. Can you imagine a person living without ethics, moral, values, beliefs, doesn't believe in good or bad..? What a nonsense life!

Well, it causes great faith to believe. Do you have that big faith about the One you believe as Saviour..? The One who will come in this world to save you..? The One that will give you eternal life..? Do you ever think that the Bible is true..? What if the philosophy of Nihilism is true..? What will happen to your faith..?

Just let me leave you with this context:
Hebrews 11:1 Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

    What Is Your Standing?

Im sorry for a late post in my blog. I've been busy these past weeks. And this is only a short post.

Have you ever think of your sins..? The things you did that you know you're not supposed to do. Things you know that they are bad, yet you still love doing it. Had you hated someone so badly, and you're not thinking of forgiving him? Or, you have a secret sin that no other man knows it... Are you sinful in your heart and mind..?  Pretty rebuking huh...?

Do these questions ever come in to your mind? Let me share this text: 1 Thessalonians 5: 2 & 6, "For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a theif in the night... Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober."

I don't have to elaborate all kinds of sin here. That doesn't matter, whether it be big or small, the fact is "it is still a sin". But do you prefer to live in a sinful life..? Well, its easier to live sinful life, ayt..? You can do whatever you want, no rules, and no law. Wrong! Living a Christ-like character should not be a burden to you. Living a sinful life...? Do you think you won't suffer the consequences of it? We do not the hour of His coming. No one can tell! But the question is, "Are you ready?"! Do you think you will be enjoying the eternal peace and happiness, or the eternal death? It is your choice.

Friends, now is the time to repent and to ask for forgiveness. You don't have to wait till' tomorrow, of maybe 5 years for now. What if Jesus Christ will come today, tonight, or tomorrow...? Are you ready..?

I will just leave you with these common texts:

    █ 1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrieghteousness...

    █ Isaiah 1:18

Come now, and let us reason tegether, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red as crimson, they shall be as wool...

*I'll post about philosophy next time.. If I fully understand the principles.*

    The Last Supper

In connection to my post with Easter, we should remember the Last Supper. But have you ever think of the true message of the Last Supper...?

    The Story

Jesus and His disciples are preparing for the Passover Feast in Jerusalem which is a yearly ritual for them to remember God's saving grace and the deliverance of the Israelites from the hands of the Egyptians.

When done preparing, Jesus on His knees, starts to wash the feet of His disciples, which is a job of a slave. "Now, having washed the disciples' feet, He said, "I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you" (John 13: 14, 15)

Then the lamb was passed around; then the unleavened bread and bitter herbs. "As they were eating, Jesus took a bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, 'Take, eat; this is my body.' And He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, 'Drink ye all of it. For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins'." (Matthew 26: 26-28).

And when they had sung hymns, they went out in to the Mount of Olives. (Matthew 26: 30)

    Symbols Used

    • Lamb- represents Jesus as a sacrificed for our sins
    • Unleavened bread- Jesus body which is "broken for us"
    • Unfermented wine- Jesus blood "poured on the cross for us"
    • Hymns- Christ's victory over death

    Ever asked why unleavened...?

"Purge out the old leavened, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened... Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth" (1 Cor. 5:7,8)

The leavening serves as a sin. Just like in a bread, the yeast causes it to puff. So unleavened bread is used to symbolized purity, free from sin and wickedness.

Usually, that is the concept almost everyone has on thier minds when talking about the Lord's supper; the bread and the wine and its meaning. But we have to take note of this: "For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done unto you." (John 13:15)

The meaning of foot-washing is oftentimes overlooked. But it's meaning is so deep. What can you say if you're Boss of Manager washed your feet..? Wouldn't you be embarassed...? And why, of all the body parts, why the feet...? It could be your arms or hands. But why the feet..? Isn't is gross to wash someone's feet? And to think that someone superior to you have done it...?

Now we can see why Jesus said "I have given you an example", for us to know that we need to practice "humility and service". No matter what our status in the society, we must humbly serve each one of us. But why humility...? As we can see, the human tendency is to keep acheiving for things that will make him higher than his neighbours; to be superior than anyone else; to have power. Humility is not easy to achieve... It takes time to achieve it. Total acceptance and must have the will to serve. We don't have to laugh and curse the less fortunates- we have to help them.   We don't have to blame someone why he doesn't have anything- we must share. Now we can see, why Jesus showed us the practice; "to remind us". We might forget it, but the Lord's supper and communion will always serve as a remembrance for us.

In doing so, we also need to clean ur hearts and minds from hatred and lust; free our heart and soul of sin and wickedness; we have to forgive our debtors as Jesus forgive us; and to live a Christ-like life.

    Happy Easter!

    Easter

Happy Easter guyz... Here's another fest to celebrate. We observed Easter celebration every year, but do we really know it's origin, symbol, and meaning...? Well, I can share some of the things I've known.

    Easter Definition:

    • Most important Christian festival of the year
    • Celebrates the return to life of Jesus Christ (Resurrection) after Crucifixion

Easter Date: First Sunday after the first full moon following the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Usually fall between March 22 and April 25. Why so early this year?

    Story of Easter:

    • Judas' Betrayal and Peter's Denial

Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus' disciples sold Jesus to the Jews with 30 pieces of silver and betrayed Him with a kiss... Afer Jesus prayed at the garden of Gethsemane, Judas together with a multitude with swords and staves with them, met Jesus and arrested Him. They then brought Him to Caiaphas the high priest, and where the scribes and elders assembled. And when they condemned that He is guilty of death, they mocked Him and spit on His face, and did strike Him with the palms of their hands. And Peter his Master from afar, and then a maid asked him if he is a follower of Christ, and he said not. Another maid asked him, and he denied it again. And for the third time, Peter denied Him again. Then the second time the cock crew. Then Peter remembered Jesus's words saying: "Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he then wept.

    • Jesus's Crucfixion and Burial

Then straightaway in the morning, they delivered Jesus in the hands of Pilate. Pilate said he found no fault in Him, yet the multitude shouted "Crucify Him! Release Barabbas!" coz' it so happened that every passover fiest, they will release a prisoner. And Pilate gave sentenced that it should be as they required. He delivered Jesus in the hands of the crowd. They mocked Him, stripped Him and put on Him a scarlet robe, put a crown of thorns upon His head, and mocked Him saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"; they spit on Him and smote Him on His head; and they crucified Him. And they set up a writing over His head saying: THIS IS JESUS THE KINGS OF THE JEWS. Then Jesus died after He gave His ghost.

Then Joseph, a rich man from Arimathea begged Pilate for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body of Jesus to be delivered. Joseph took the body, wrapped in white clean linen cloth and laid the body on a new tomb; then rolled a great stone in the sepulchre.

    • Jesus' Resurrection

The next day after the preparation day (Sabbath day), the chief priest and the Pharisees asked Pilate to put guards on the tomb coz' they stated that "the deceiver said that He will arise after three days". They said that the disciples might come at night and steal His body, and then say unto the people that He is risen from the dead. So they put a guard on it.

Now, upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the sepulchre. And behold the angel of the Lord descended from heaven and rolled the stone from the door. And because of fear, the keepers did shake and died. The angels then told the ladies that "He Is Risen" ! Go quickly, and tell His disciples.

    Word Origin:

    • Eastre- english word; name of a pagan goddess of spring, the name of a spring festival, or the name of the season itself
    • Eostarun- german word; means dawn
    • Albae- latin word; means both dawn and white; Easter was consider day of white because newly baptized members wear white clothes at Easter observances.
    • Pascha- other term use to name Easter; comes from the hebrew word pesah which means passover (deliverance of Jews from the Egyptians); Jesus was celebrating the Passover before He was crucified.

    Lent Period:

The first and best-known part of the season. A period of about 40 days before the Easter Sunday. They consider it a time of penance-a time to show sorrow for sins and to seek forgiveness. Based on the 40 day fasting of Jesus and the 40 year journey of the Israelites from Egpyt to Jerusalem.

    • Begins on Ash Wednesday: start of the Lent period for the Roman Catholic, Angelican, and Lutheran. Based on the text Gen. 3:19 "for dust thou art, and unto dust shall thou return". .
    • Forgiveness Sunday: observed by Eastern Orthodox churches; sunday before the Ash wednesday. Lent officially begins in the Eastern Orthodox churches on the next day called Pure Monday.

Holy week: final week of Lent period. Recalls the events leading to Jesus' death and Resurrection.

    • Palm Sunday: first day of the Holy week. This celebrates Jesus' triumphal entry in Jerusalem where people spread palm branches and clothing before Him. Many churches distribute palm leaves, and sometimes woven them into cross as a practice.
    • Maundy Thursday: also called Holy Thurdsday; recalls Jesus' last meal (Last Supper) and His arrest and imprisonment. Many churches do Communion (feet-washing) services in this day, which portraits the Last Supper.
    • Good Friday: observes the death of Jesus in the cross. Most churches hold mourning services on this day. Other christians such as in spanish-speaking countries hold processions in which people carry statues of the dying Jesus and Mary. Philippines hold a parade which portrait how Jesus carried the cross in the streets of Jerusalem.
    • Holy Saturday: day of solemn vigil. The major activity of the day comes at nightfall as observance as the resurrection approaches. This moment includes candle lighting which represents spreading of Jesus' light throughout the world.
    • Easter Sunday: celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus. Mostly the major event are held on Saturday night. This day is usually set aside for outdoor Easter services, fiests and celebrations.

    Easter Symbols:

    • Crucifix and the Cross: Crucifix- a cross with an image of Jesus' body hanging from it. It symbolizes Jesus as a sacrifice. An empty cross- without the figure of Christ cruicified- symbolizes Jesus' victory over death and the new life and hope this victor brings to the believers
    • Sunday: assocaited with Resurrection
    • Candles: represents Jesus' return to life; the Light of the World.
    • Eggs and rabbits: egg represents new life; rabbits are associated with thier fertility of spring because of their ability to produce many young.
    • The Lamb: represents Jesus and relates His death to that of a lamb sacrificed during Passover.

    Easter Customs:

    • Carnivals: Provides opportunities and merrymaking before the solem fast days of Lent. Carnivals often feature parades in which people wear elaborate costumes. The most famous carnival is the Mardi Gras, celebrated on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent begins. Mardi Gras is a french term which literally means Fat Tuesday. Mostly christians hold parades and fiest; eating and drinking the food that they can't eat from Ash Wednesday.
    • Easter Eggs: exchanging and eating easer eggs. The eggs are hardboiled and dyed in different colors. In many countries, children hunt for Easter eggs hidden at home.
    • Passion Plays: dramatize the Easter story
    • Feasting: celebrates the fiest at Easter Sunday
    • Wearing New Clothes: represents the New Life offered through Jesus' Resurrection

Honestly, it is just now that I know about this festival. I really don't have any idea about the eggs and rabbits.. lolz... And tis' now that I know the meaning of the Lent Period and the Holy week. But as I made this post, I reviewed the story of Jesus' Crucifixion and Resurrection. The Crucufixion is so heart-crushing. I haven't seen the movie the The Passion of Mel Gibson, but I can really picture out His pain and agony. Walking in the streets of Jerusalem half naked, worn a crown of thorns, with blood on His face; mocked and abused. They nailed the hands that give them life.

And Pilate's action really amazed me. Do you think he believed in Jesus as a King? He told the crowd three times that he saw no fault in Him. Or maybe he is just a coward. He's afraid of civil war. He's afraid that he can't get the multitude's support.

But the Crucifixion needs to be done. Not only to fulfill the prophecies, but also to save us from our sins. He took our part in the Calvary. He served as a sacrificed for us to be saved. Christ's Resurrection proves something. His victory against death gives us hope. It shows that He can't only redeem His own self in death, but also the entire christian community. What a Great Love Indeed!
